Mission & Philosophy
We would like to welcome all of you to the Brentwood athletic program! We hope you had a terrific summer and looking forward to participating on at least one or hopefully two or three of our teams this year. Athletics are an important component of the education and development of Brentwood students and have been ever since the school opened in 1975. The school’s founders recognized that participation in competitive athletics helped develop more capable, fully rounded graduates. So, from the very beginning, Brentwood has made a concentrated effort to develop a first class athletic program both in terms of competitive success and sportsmanlike behavior that brings honor to our players and to the school.
Today Brentwood is known for the high rate of participation of the student body on its athletic teams, the remarkable achievement of those teams in a wide variety of sports, and often the way our players, coaches and fans conduct themselves. We are proud of our athletic program, the student-athletes who participate in it, the coaches who are the foundation of its success and the supportive community that does so much to help the athletic program achieve its goals.
We look forward to cheering with you and supporting all Brentwood athletes and teams through another exciting year! Go Eagles!
—Joe Shapiro, Director of Athletics, Upper Division
Statement of Philosophy for Athletics
Brentwood School believes that physical education and athletics complement and enrich the academic experience and are integral to every student’s education and personal growth. To that end, we offer a comprehensive 7th through 12th Grade physical education curriculum and a wide array of interscholastic athletics in order to foster a love of sport and a life-long commitment to health and fitness. We view coaches as teachers and the fields and courts as extensions of the classroom. We encourage our students to participate and to strive for excellence. The school seeks to produce highly competitive teams and prizes character, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Sportsmanship
At Brentwood, sportsmanship matters. We take great pride in hanging CIF-Southern Section Championship banners and amassing league championship plaques, but we find even more meaning in representing ourselves and our school in a consistently positive manner. We have partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), and require all students, coaches, and parents to attend workshops at the start of each season. Our students work very hard on the athletics field, compete fiercely but fairly in all competition, and give true meaning to the phrase, “We Honor the Game.” Brentwood was recognized by the Gold Coast Athletic Conference in 2006 for having demonstrated the best sportsmanship in all sports among the 18-school association.
