Arts

The mission of the arts at Brentwood School is to inspire personal and intellectual growth through the exploration, critical analysis and disciplined practice, and ultimately the shared experience of creative expression.

Our arts faculty, artists and performers themselves, offer instruction in visual arts, dance, music, and theater. In every course, our teachers strive to foster self-knowledge, a willingness to experiment and take risks, an understanding that through art we create and reflect culture, and a commitment to the creative process. Exhibits, recitals, and productions throughout the year celebrate our students’ accomplishments.

Children enter the Lower School with a world of possibilities in front of them. Brentwood’s arts education encourages them to discover the musician, actor, or artist within. In addition to fostering and inspiring artistic ability, our program instills a thirst for and life-long appreciation of the arts.

  • Highlights from the All-School Art Show

The All-School Art Show is a yearly event that highlights the work of our K-12 Eagle artists, spanning the full range of our visual arts curriculum. It was, once again, a wonderful event that united both campuses and our community through the arts. All of our artists and their teachers should be very proud of the work that was displayed at the show, and of the show itself, which seems to get better and better every year! • Lower School Shakespeare Festival Wows Audience!

This past weekend, the students in the Musical Theater Activity delved into Shakespeare fearlessly and energetically. Thirty-five inspired thespians from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, presented two original musical plays written by Olga Nevin. The shows were based on plays by William Shakespeare—The Taming of the Shrew, a musical adaptation of the famous comedy, and Here Comes the Moon, a musical fantasy combining the music of the Beatles with scenes from the Bard. All in all the young players presented four magical performances. It was fun, it was moving, it was educational, and it was thoroughly entertaining...

  • The Drawing Dreams Foundation Connects with Lower Division Artists

Recently, the Lower Division Art Department Flickr page has brought about an amazing opportunity to shine and contribute to the health of children across the globe! A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the Drawing Dreams Foundation, a newly organized Berkeley, California-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that provides art supplies to hospitalized children through children's hospitals' Child Life and Artist-in-Residence programs. A representative from the organization noticed our students' work on the Levin+Shapiro flickr photostream and were excited to share the work in their on-line gallery. In an effort to nurture "Children's Creative Minds and Spirits," they feature both children's artwork as well as professional artists' work on their website. Drawing Dreams has already featured one of our students' work on their "Children-Helping-Children" galleries on their site. Kindergartener, Ruby M., has a Yellow Submarine in the gallery at http://www.drawingdreams.org/KidsArtRubyYellowSubmarine.html. They have expressed interest in featuring many other Lower Division students' pieces as well, so keep checking their website and we will also keep you posted!
