Physical Education

THE BRENTWOOD SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO OFFER EACH CHILD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW TO HIS OR HER FULLEST POTENTIAL.

As with cognitive, emotional, and social development, physical development is varied and the program was designed with this understanding foremost in mind. Students in grades Kindergarten through six participate in physical education classes four times each week, taught by a team of three teachers.

In the early grades, the focus is on motor development, especially as it relates to spatial awareness and locomotor movements. Students participate in various cooperative activities in addition to learning skills that emphasize hand and foot-eye coordination. In the middle grades, students learn more refined movement skills that lead to organized games and additional team-building activities. The program in grades four through six builds upon the solid foundation that the students developed earlier, encouraging them to gain even more confidence in using their bodies for athletic pursuits, be it in a competitive setting, for enjoyment, or fitness. Elements of the program are planned so as to balance the importance of life-long fitness with the playing of organized games and sports in addition to more complex team-building exercises.

Athletics Outside the Classroom

ALL TEAMS OPERATE ON A NO-CUT PHILOSOPHY SINCE THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE EVERY CHILD WITH THE CHANCE TO PLAY ON AN ORGANIZED TEAM.

Playing times are rotated equally to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop his or her talents, regardless of their initial level of skill development. In addition to regularly scheduled games with teams from the Coastal Canyon League and other schools, both the 6th Grade girls and boys participate in basketball tournaments each year. 6th Grade girls also take part in a volleyball tournament. The league also hosts an annual Track and Field meet for all 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade students who wish to participate.

The After-School Athletics program is open to all 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade students and includes:
