Upper Division Arts Mission Statement

The mission of the arts at Brentwood School is to inspire personal and intellectual growth through the exploration, critical analysis and disciplined practice, and ultimately the shared experience of creative expression. Our arts faculty, artists and performers themselves, offer instruction in visual arts, dance, music, and theater. In every course, our teachers strive to foster self-knowledge, a willingness to experiment and take risks, an understanding that through art we create and reflect culture, and a commitment to the creative process. Exhibits, recitals, and productions throughout the year celebrate our students’ accomplishments.

The creative process is not a straight line. In class, each student engages in a series of projects or pieces that require continual rethinking, refining, revising, and rehearsing. And, it is this dynamic of disciplined effort and imaginative response that underscores the creative process in all the arts.

Students participating in the Arts Program at Brentwood School will find a supportive atmosphere that promotes questioning, individuality and diversity. They will be guided by a faculty who are all engaged in the creative process themselves in their individual art forms, and this ensures that the relationship between faculty and student is based on the reality that we are all doing the same work but at different levels. It is a comfortable, mentoring relationship.

  • Brentwood Dance Students Attend Workshop with Faye Driscoll at UCLA

Our Brentwood School dance students recently took a field trip to work with award-winning choreographer Faye Driscoll. Seven dancers, Corey B., Lexie C., Arianna D., Julia K., Anna M., Lucia R., and Kendall Z., who represent a cross section of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors from the Brentwood dance program, gathered with me for lunch on the lovely pool patio. Our plan was to eat, write some thank you notes to two of the donors who made our field trip possible, and then to book it down Sunset to UCLA to dance with Driscoll and twenty-five other dancers from four other L.A. independent schools...

  • Upper Division Arts Week Highlights

The All-School Art Show kicked off at the opening reception on Monday, April 23, and was on display all week in the East Campus Pavilion. The artistic talents of students in Grade K-12 were on display, along with some artwork by our visual arts faculty. In support of all of our Eagle artists, administrators on the East Campus devised a special schedule to ensure maximum exposure for the artwork on display in the All-School Art Show. In the Upper Division, the Advisory/Assembly schedule was revised so that all seniors and juniors would view the art on Wednesday, and freshmen and sophomores would have the same opportunity on Thursday. It was wonderful to see hundreds of kids looking at art and discussing it with each other. It was also great for our student artists to get feedback and praise from their friends and classmates. Check out photos from Art Week, and read more about other events that took place.
