Assistant Director of Upper School

Brentwood School, a vibrant and diverse K-12 independent school, is looking for an Assistant Director of Upper School beginning July, 2018. We are seeking individuals with administrative experience to assist the Upper School Director in maintaining a dynamic environment in the Upper School. Candidates should have at least 5 years of teaching or other relevant experience in leadership positions, preferably in independent schools.Candidates holding advanced degrees are preferred.

It is expected that a successful candidate would:

  • Foster a culture of community in the Upper School
  • Support programming that strengthens student commitment to the core values
  • Nurture the growth of emotional intelligence and character development of students
  • Demonstrate and promote a collaborative approach when working with faculty and staff
  • Support students in meeting various school expectations
  • Support and advance school-wide initiatives such as expanding student-centered learning practices, integrating programming with the Center for Innovative Leadership and fostering the relationship with the VA, among others

The Assistant Upper School Director should:

  • Be highly organized and have excellent communication skills
  • Exhibit a collaborative approach to leadership that produces effective decision making and that reveals a genuine enthusiasm for working with colleagues, sharing strategies, and exploring effective ways to enhance the student experience
  • Have passion for teaching and learning and find joy working with adolescents
  • Cultivate an equitable and diverse Upper School community

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide overall assistance to the Upper School Director in the routine operation of the Upper School
  • Partner with the Upper School Director to conduct all faculty annual goal meetings, formal and informal observations, and summary meetings
  • Work with the Upper School Director and the Dean of Students regarding student conduct and discipline
  • Oversee the team responsible for the creation of the annual master schedule
  • Participate in admissions events
  • Help plan and coordinate special assemblies
  • Oversee situations involving students in special circumstances by working with the Learning Specialist and the Dean of Students
  • Participate in the hiring of new faculty and staff
  • Assist the Director of Equity and Inclusion with Upper School initiatives
  • Serve on the Curriculum Committee and assist the Upper School Director and Department Chairs to further the academic and pedagogical goals of the Upper School
  • Be accessible to parents, as needed
  • Teach a minimum of one semester
  • Serve as an academic advisor
  • Partner with the Mentor Coordinator to oversee new faculty mentoring
  • Attend all grade level, faculty, administrative, and other meetings
  • Oversee the Student Feedback Instrument and other surveys throughout the year
  • Manage calendars such as the test calendar, track calendar, and field trip calendar
  • Oversee the Independent Study program and work with students and faculty to create viable opportunities
