Tell us about TLA Therapy:
TLA Therapy is a private psychotherapy practice I started with my two colleagues and good friends, Elana Lev and Lindsay Rickel. The three of us met while working at the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. We specialize in providing evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy to individuals (adolescents and adults) as well as families.
How did the idea for TLA Therapy come about?
It is our mission at TLA to increase and optimize access to science-based therapy to anyone who wants it. TLA stands for “Three Letter Acronym.” This speaks to the acronyms of the various types of evidenced-based treatment we offer to our clients - CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), CPT (cognitive processing therapy) to name a few.
What is the problem you are trying to solve and why is it important?
While working at UCLA in various inpatient and outpatient settings, we noticed a significant gap in care for individuals leaving the psychiatric hospital or intensive outpatient program. Numerous clients would tell us that going from several hours of care per day to just one hour of care per week was too steep of a drop-off. At TLA, we aim to fill this gap by providing customizable therapy treatment plans to individuals that may need more than just one hour of therapy per week.
What differentiates you from other companies?
We are extremely proud of the work that we do as well as the team we have. As founders who are social workers, women, and mothers, we bring a compassionate and unique perspective to our clients. Our team of therapists is highly trained in several modalities as well. We prioritize a team approach to community-based mental health. What this means is making it a priority to coordinate care with other members of a client’s care team (psychiatrist, occupational therapists, other specialists, etc.).
What outcomes are you seeing since the creation of TLA Therapy?
We have had the pleasure of seeing clients who came to us while being on disability leave from work return to fulfilling careers, clients who have achieved academic goals by attending and completing college and graduate programs, and clients who have experienced greater joy and satisfaction in their relationships. Due to the nature of mental health, we know that even those clients who have made great strides will still struggle from time to time. The best indicator for how well we have done is seeing how our clients react and respond to adversity with the tools and strategies with which we have provided.
