BCIL Innovation Challenge on Global Goals
by Josh Berger, Director of the Belldegrun Center for Innovative Leadership

Hundreds of Brentwood students participated in this year’s BCIL Innovation Challenge related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. After multiple rounds of judging, five finalists were named and presented this week in a live pitch event to the entire East Campus. View a highlight reel of the event.

This year’s finalist entries focused on innovative solutions for increasing food production, ensuring clean water in residential homes, protecting endangered species, and expanding access to affordable housing.

Finalists presented their ideas and then answered questions from a live panel of judges that included Darlene Fukuji, the Associate Director of LMU’s Fred Kiesner Center for Entrepreneurship and four BWS alumni (Garrett Chang ’05, Paris Coleman ’09, Raven Morgan ’14, and Areanna Novaes Sabine ’14) with expertise ranging from affordable housing development, to public policy, to entrepreneurship.

Each entry was judged on the following criteria: innovation/creativity, feasibility, impact on a UN Sustainable Development Goal, and quality of presentation. Fukuji reflected on the outstanding presentations, noting, “The students are so impressive and brave for being able to pitch in front of the whole school!” Added Zach Chien, BCIL Entrepreneurship Coordinator who helped prepare each of the teams, “It’s an honor to work with such passionate, committed, coachable, and courageous students. Their pitches were a celebration of all the hard work they’ve done over the past few months, and I hope to continue working with them as they move towards the implementation stage.”

After tallying the votes from our judges as well as the community, we are excited to announce that Ruby Rose C. ’23 and Max W. ’23 were honored as the winners of this year’s event. The BCIL looks forward to supporting every finalist along with other BWS students in further developing and implementing their ideas.
