On Sunday, April 15, several members of El Nido volunteered at the Big Sunday Veterans Dinner event. When we arrived, there was a lively crowd of volunteers and Veterans from different cities, including San Diego. We sat together and wrote letters to soldiers and spoke with the Veterans. They were born in many states around the US, and each one had a story more compelling than the other. Afterwards, a Veteran singing group from New Directions for Veterns performed an a capella rendition of the National Anthem, and the Vets, advanced in age, slowly stood up and took their hats off; it was touching to see and important to remember—what these men and women fought so hard for.
Then came dinner time. All hands on deck, working side by side with other volunteers, we served a delicious dinner to the Veterans and volunteers. There were several Middle School students present, and with each bread roll served, they said: "Thank you for your service." Such a touching gesture. More music, followed by trivial pursuit games and a lot of laughter, and then clean up! It was a wonderful afternoon, and whenever asked where we came from, we proudly replied: "El Nido, Brentwood School!!"
