Our Middle School mathematicians have been busy! Ten of our very own represented Brentwood in the city-wide MathCounts competition. Held at Northrop Grumman, the high energy math competition provides students in Grades 6-8 the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. Coached by Middle School teachers Mike Kalan and Betsy Sandler, the students completed four rounds of competition. Even more, 8th grader Will V. was selected to compete in the prestigious “Countdown Round,” which involved answering problems “game show” style in front of an audience of about 300 people. We are exponentially proud of all of our mathematicians. Congratulations to Arthur F., Jonas F., Lucas G., Asher L., Angelina L., Alexa P., Allie R., Paolo S., Will V., and Ryan W.!
In other math news, as part of their year-long theme of money and personal finance, the 8th Grade math classes are participating in their annual 10-week online stock market game. The Middle School was privileged to have Brentwood alumnus and stock options expert, and parent of Abby, Jason Goldberg ’91, speak at lunch in the BCIL Hub. Over 30 students and faculty enjoyed pizza kindly provided by Mr. Goldberg and cookies baked by Mrs. Kalan while Mr. Goldberg covered numerous timely topics including securities and options basics, volatility, safe havens, investing for the long run, growth versus value stocks, and the concept of the present value of money. The stock market game runs through April 10 and will culminate with a class party prize for the class with the top-performing portfolio.
