On Tuesday, February 5, Brentwood's Upper School Jazz Ensembles gave great instrumental and vocal performances at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Grill in Bel Air. Thanks to the inspiration of parent Diana Maiman, the concert also operated as a benefit for Veterans, generating a $1,600 donation.
One non-Brentwood attendee at the club gushed about the talent of our students and how "they owned the stage." The diverse set list ranged from standards like "The Thrill is Gone" to "Hotel California." Students wowed the audience with a big brass sound in Michael Jackson's hit "PYT," lulled us with "James" by Pat Metheny, and soothed us with "Sunny." Students Ruby, Tabby, and Sierra dazzled everyone with their soulful vocals.
Much gratitude to Michael Cottone, our resident jazz instructor, for helping the kids discover their jazz coolness. He worked overtime to make certain our kids sounded like they belonged at Vibrato! The VA connection continues with the initiation of student jam sessions, which will bring live music to the Veterans at the West LA VA campus—the brainstorm of 10th grader, Sam W. Stay tuned for more!
