Each year around this time, I go home with flour in my hair, smelling faintly of ginger, cinnamon and allspice. In short, I smell like a giant gingerbread man. This is a sure sign that we have started our measurement unit in 2nd Grade by making gingerbread mixes. In this unit, students have been learning how to use Metric and Standard measurements. We teach Metric measurements, since most of the world uses this system. We also teach Standard or Imperial measurements for our gingerbread mix since that is most commonly used in our recipes. In the end, 2nd Grade students will have the opportunity to give their gingerbread mix to a loved one or keep it and make cookies at home.
