There are a few events during the year when the East Campus becomes overrun with our younger Eagles from the West Campus. The Sports Spectacular is one that took place this past Tuesday on a chilly but sunny afternoon. Lower Schoolers come over in their uniforms and Eaglewear to run around throughout the athletics facilities—climbing up and down the Stadium Field hills—to cheer on our Upper School athletes during an action-packed afternoon of exciting Junior Varsity and Varsity soccer and basketball. The food trucks fill their bellies and then they stand on the sidelines in awe of the older players, some of whom they may have met as counselors during Summer at Brentwood camps, or some who are the older siblings of their classmates. I stood with a few 4th Grade girls as they watched the Varsity Girls soccer game...and you would have thought we were watching a World Cup soccer match starring Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd. The girls—young soccer players themselves just starting out—were yelling praise to the "big girls" on the field every time they kicked or ran down the field. The Varsity players loved seeing their young fans, and waved to the sidelines when they heard their name. It was simply adorable.
This event is such a great opportunity to build community among all grades of students—the lower schoolers see what they can achieve down the line, and the upper schoolers love seeing the faces of their littlest fans. This is what makes the Spectacular so special...and spectacular!
