France is More than Just Paris
France is More than Just Paris

By Lynn Gelfand, Ph.D., Upper School World Languages Department Chair

Foreign language teachers focus their curriculum on listening, speaking, reading, and writing within the cultural context of the target language. In order to help students gain greater awareness of cultures within the Francophone world, a recent project in French 2 classes had them become travel agents tasked with luring tourists to their assigned region in France. They used Canva, an online program, to design a trifold brochure that would highlight the region's geographical distinctions (climate, rivers, mountains), tourist attractions, famous sights, historical and cultural events, food, industry, and arts and crafts. Using a design tool like Canva encourages skill-building in how to create successful digital communications with the goal of influencing the reader, while also reinforcing language development. Students had to make layout, color, and font choices in a brochure format, making sure their communication was easily readable and inviting. Digital communication projects of this type represent an overarching Educational Technology goal for our students. Check out some of the brochures HERE. Next semester we will revisit the regions and have the students create photo montage video commercials for their regions with narration and music included.
