"Sorry to bother you so early; my daughter came home with unbridled enthusiasm and just has to be the first to sign up!"
I received this call at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday from an inspired Upper School parent after his child attended the lunch meeting for the Belldegrun Center for Innovative Leadership course, Global Health, the day prior. The student had met Dr. LaBrot, Professor in the Keck School of Medicine of USC and President of Floating Doctors, and Mr. Park, Upper School Service Liaison and History Department teacher, who will be co-teaching this new course during Summer at Brentwood. Students will spend two weeks on campus thinking critically and creatively, building collaboration skills, and learning about the global health landscape and their vital role in it, now and in the future. Then they will travel to Panama for a week of hands-on field training and cultural exchange.
This course highlights some of the many exciting aspects of Summer at Brentwood. Summer is unique in that it offers time for students to dive deeper into an area of interest, build skills, and experience learning through a different lens. In addition to the Global Health course for Upper School students, the Belldegrun Center for Innovative Leadership is also sponsoring Refugees and Resettlement, a course dedicated to student-led, interactive learning experiences where students engage with the world around them and work to address challenges within their own community. At the Middle School level, the Entrepreneurship Institute and "Design with Purpose" are camps geared toward students entering grades 6-8. Of course, Camp Invention is making a splash again during the last week of Lower School Camp.
Summer at Brentwood has programs available for all ages and interests—from athletics and academics, to art and advocacy. For more details, and to see a full list of courses, please visit www.summeratbrentwood.com. Registration is now open!
I'm already thinking of sunny days at Summer at Brentwood, and hope you are, too!
